The American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program is a gun safety education and marksmanship program that encompasses the basic elements of safety, education, enjoyment and competition. Both males and females can participate, through Legion sponsorship; disabled youth are encouraged to join, as competitive shooting is a sport that creates an equal playing field for all competitors. Contact your local Legion post, Sons of The American Legion squadron or Auxiliary unit for information about affiliating as a club or individual or contact your county 4-H office to see what assistance your Post could offer.
For more information on the shooting sports program, contact our Department Americanism Chairman or go to About the Junior Shooting Sports Program.
Most of the youth shooting sports programs in South Dakota are ran by 4-H programs but it is also a program that is strongly supported by the American Legion, especially in other states. We would like to propose that if there are counties in the state where there are limited resources determining the availability of the shooting sports program, it might be possible to work together. With the combined resources of 4-H and the local Legion, we might be able to offer shooting sports programs to youth that didn’t have the option before.
